Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT)

Wouldn't it be great if you could correct your shortsightedness (myopia) and reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses — without having to undergo eye surgery?

It might sound far-fetched, but it's a reality for many people. Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) or orthokeratology is a non-surgical process clinically developed to reshape the cornea while you sleep. The result is the temporary correction of myopia with or without mild astigmatism.

CRT has been performed for decades by optometrists and eye doctors who specialize in contact lens fitting. Recent interest in CRT has increased due to advances in technology and a desire among many people for a non-surgical alternative to LASIK and other refractive eye surgery to correct their shortsightedness.

Similar in appearance to a standard gas permeable contact lens, CRT lenses gently reshape the corneal surface during sleep to provide clear, natural vision when the lenses are removed upon waking up in the morning. CRT offers freedom from glasses and the hassle of wearing contact lenses during the day. This revolutionary technology can enhance the lifestyle of those requiring vision correction but do not want to wear glass or contacts during the day.

Who Can Wear CRT?

  • Active individuals participating in sports without the interference of glasses or contacts. CRT works best up to about -4.00 dioptres of myopia and -1.00 dioptres of astigmatism.
  • People who don’t want to have refractive surgery yet
  • Children who do not want to wear contact lenses at school or sport.
  • People who have dry eye may also benefit from CRT because the contact lenses are worn at night, not during the day where air-conditioning and prolonged computer use may exacerbate the condition.
  • Lapsed contact lens wearers who have had some issues with comfort or their contact lenses not performing at their best during the day.
